So, as decreed by the law of procrastination, i've spent my saturday night online shopping and watching tv, instead of reading the all-important textbook.
'The Lost Tapes' on Discovery channel showcases original videos taken by various people, which record up till the point of their unsuspecting and unexpected deaths.
The first was of a young lady on a solo sailing mission around the world. Her journey was recorded by 24-hour running cameras from various angles on her boat for live screening to her viewers. On her last scheduled day [she was planning via webcam with her boyfriend what to have for her first meal on land in months], a distress signal from another boat was received. Something along the lines of "help, hel- oh my god, what is that?!" - cut. So she goes to check it out, but finds an empty boat bobbing on the ocean. All was normal, till she circled the boat and saw blood splattered over it. Suddenly there was a great jerking of her boat and the engine died, and she began freaking out and told Charles [the bf, on continuous webcam access i guess] about it all. Not being able to stand it any longer, she went back on deck to hoist the sails. But just as she was standing in the most precarious position, the boat jerked again and she was thrown overboard. She didnt have enough strength to pull herself up with the safety cable, so she had to detach herself and swim to the back of the boat. But she couldnt manage the current, and watched helplessly as the boat became smaller and smaller. The worst thing was, Charles was still at the webcam and shouting encouragements to her, and the cam attached to her diving gear recorded her voice and cries of helplessness as well. Seemed like she gave up. But then, there was frantic screaming and shouting, then silence, as something attacked her. Her body was never found. They speculate about this prehistoric creature thing.
It was so sad, they were even planning on what to eat when she got back.
The second was on this middle-aged man filming a jungle-survival guide. He was dropped off in the tropics with zero contact with the outside world. Within hours of day 1, he managed to get a nasty bite from an animal while digging into a hole in search of lunch. Doomed from then on. Day 2, the gash was already obviously infected and he was feeling ill. So he went in search of the village about 5 miles away. Throughout his trek, there was something big stalking him, as if waiting for the bacteria in his wound to overcome his body. By night, he grew slightly delirious and looked terrible - face was gaunt, eyes were sunken and hollow-looking, pale. And then he gave up the trek, looked in his camera, and told his wife and kid that he loved them, then broke down. Suddenly, just within a split-second, his facial expression changed from resigned to that of pure terror. You could see too clearly his eyes go wide, his mouth open in a silent scream at the unknown creature coming at him from behind. The running was useless, and it caught up, he stumbled backwards, and was dragged with flailing arms into the darkness.
Again the body was never found, but a village tour guide found his cam just a quarter mile from the village. He was that close. And his footage of "Stranded" only lasted two days with a horrific end. I cant even imagine how his family would feel after watching this video.
Would you have struggled with all your might to free yourself from the creature's jaws, or surrendered and hope for a quick and swift ending? Just a second of excruciating pain before nothingness.
